Pittsburgh Vein Center was founded by Dr. Mario T. Plaza-Ponte. The center specializes in Total Vein Care and Diagnostic Vascular Ultrasound. It is staffed by two certified Vascular Technologists with extensive scanning experience in both venous and arterial pathology. The equipment utilized is state of the art, Philips DH-15, and Philips x-50 high resolution machines with Gray scale and color Doppler. All imaging data is stored in a secure server. Interpretation of the data is performed by Dr. Plaza-Ponte who is a ARDM certified physician in Vascular Interpretation.

Bio of Mario T. Plaza-Ponte
Mario T. Plaza-Ponte, MD, is a fellowship trained Surgeon (General and Colon and Rectal Surgery) with more than 30 years of surgical experience in the Pittsburgh area. In the first 4 years of practice, he worked closely with a prestigious Cardio-Vascular Surgeon and participated in more than 400 open heart and other vascular procedures. During his 22 years at West Penn Hospital, he participated in the surgical training of surgical residents as a Colon and Rectal Surgeon until June of 2007 when he stopped performing major surgery. Due to his former interest with Vascular Surgery, Dr. Plaza-Ponte decided to become an expert in Disorders of the Venous Circulation, Chronic lower extremity wounds and Lymphedema.
In 2008, he became one of the first 248 physicians in the country to become certified by the American Board of Phlebology and in 2009; he obtained Certification in Vascular Ultrasound by the ARDMS. Recently, he received additional hands on training in the performance and interpretation of Vascular Physiologic Testing, Venous and Arterial Ultrasound at the Vascular Laboratory of Brigham's Women Hospital -Harvard Medical School- Boston, Massachusetts, Directed by Marie Gerhard-Herman, MD.
Dr. Plaza-Ponte holds Board Certification and is a Fellow of: The American Board of Surgery, American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the American Board of Phlebology. He also has Certifications by the American Registry of Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in "Registered Vascular Technology" and is a "Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation". He is a member of the American College of Phlebology, The American Venous Forum, and The Society of Vascular Ultrasound.
At the PVC Dr. Plaza-Ponte uses the latest technology to treat chronic venous conditions in the outpatient office setting. In the last two years, he has performed over two thousand catheter ablation procedures using state of the art technology (Radiofrequency and Laser). He also performs Ultrasound guided and Visual Sclerotherapy as well as surgical removal of varicose veins through minute -2mm- incisions (Microphlebectomy) with excellent cosmetic and functional results. He is committed to the highest quality and excellence in his work through continuing medical education and training in centers of excellence throughout the country.
