Following your diagnostic evaluation, the doctor may recommend treatment, if deemed medically necessary, to improve your symptoms.  Most treatments are covered by all insurance companies if the patient has varicose vein coverage.  (This should be confirmed by the patient with their insurance carrier prior to treatment.)  Individual insurance plans vary in their specific requirements, but all require a patient to have tried conservative measures for 6 weeks to 3 months, prior to treatment authorization.   (A patient with an active leg ulcer may be exempt from this requirement.)  Another requirement is that symptoms impact quality of life and/or activities of daily living:  i.e. inability to stand for a prolonged period of time, interference with normal exercise, needing to rest and elevate the legs, or any interruption of activity in the workplace or at home.  Telangiectasia and spider veins are not covered by insurance, but treating the underlying cause is, and may result in improvement in the spider veins.

Conservative treatment consists of:

  • Wearing medical grade compression stockings (compression >20mmHg)
  • Rest
  • Leg elevation
  • Mild exercise
  • Weight loss (if applicable)
  • Avoiding prolonged immobility
  • Analgesics
